My Best of British

Write for Best of British magazine

Best of British would love to hear your memories of past decades.

Do you have a tale to tell that you would like to share with other readers?

Readers' real life stories from past decades are what make Best of British great. We welcome any recollection from the 1930s, 1940s, 1950s, 1960s and 1970s – even up to the 1980s. We’d like to hear about the clothes you wore, the places and houses you lived in and how they were decorated, the transport you used, your childhood toys and games, the books and journals you read, holiday memories, and any memorable news events that affected you and your daily life.

Tell us about your life in the Fifties - family life, where you lived and the price of housing, what you wore and the food you ate, the world of entertainment, or advances in science and technology. For the men - where you worked, if you drove a car, what clothes you wore, and your leisure time activities. For the ladies - did you work or were you a housewife? How did you manage your housekeeping and chores? What did you wear for work and leisure.

Do you have any unusual hobbies you could write about with authority? Or do you have a collection of memorabilia you could write about?

Tell us about your first job – whether in part time or full-time employment. Did you work in an industry or job that no longer exists? Where they happy or challenging times? What special skills or traditional working methods do you remember that have now been lost to British industry?

We would like to hear from ladies who were employed in the Women’s Land Army or the Women’s Timber Corps; or as factory or office workers during and after the war.

Memories of wartime or the post-war years are always welcome – either first-hand accounts or details of the lives of family members from previous generations.

Do you have memories of National Service, particularly towards the end of conscription in 1960 and the final conscript leaving the Army in 1963?

Are you or have you been a member of the emergency services or organisations such as the AA or RAC, with memories going back over the decades – or do you have any unusual stories of having been on the receiving end of such services?

Are you an enthusiast of vintage transport? Anything that travelled the roads, farm tracks, rails, cycle paths, canals and airways in the past, from old cars to steam-powered vehicles and trains – even the early days of commercial air travel. Do you own a vintage vehicle with a special story, or have you fond memories of the transport workhorses of the past?

Do you have special memories of the changing seasons – such as summertime, bonfire nights and Christmas?

Of course, there may be many more subjects about life in Britain in the past, or our history and heritage that you may be able to write about. Please let us know!

Please send article submissions by post to Best of British, The Clock Tower, 6 Market Gate, Market Deeping, Lincolnshire PE6 8DL.
