Digging for Victory
The Dig for Victory campaign gave many wartime civilians something to do that was both strenuous and productive so that they, too, could do their bit. After the war, there were still food shortages to be faced and food to be grown in gardens. Flowers were frowned on and vegetables ruled the garden and lawns disappeared under potatoes. Even the roofs of Anderson shelters were sometimes planted, as was the moat at the Tower of London.
The book Digging for Victory – Gardens and Gardening in Wartime, by Twigs Way and Mike Brown, recaptures the wartime period in well-illustrated detail.

Seventy Years On
In the seven decades that have passed since the beginning of WWII, Britain has rarely been truly at peace. In Seventy Years On – A Tapestry in Time, David Arnold takes the memories of ordinary British people caught up in conflict.
The years 1939-1945 occupy much of the book. A timeline in the form of a war diary is interspersed with illustrations that reveal every aspect of the war at home and abroad. There are first-hand accounts of civilians as well as the service men and women who endured those extraordinary times.
