Remember Wake Weekends

Kelham Island Museum relived that long-gone summertime tradition last weekend. Their Holidays at Home event on July 31st and August 1st celebrated Wakes Weekends, when industrial towns across the north of England shut down for the holiday season. Visitors learnt about Sheffield’s patriotic holiday spirit during the 1940s and 1950s, with entertainment from Forties’ singer Paul Harper and George Formby singer, P. E. Casper Esquire (pictured).
