With this year’s celebrations of the Talyllyn Railway well underway, another piece of railway revival nostalgia is helping keep the subject front and centre.

The 1953 movie was in part inspired by the efforts of the Talyllyn volunteers just a couple of years earlier and tells the story of a group of villagers trying to keep their branch line operating after British Railways moved to close it. The cast of characters, which includes Stanley Holloway, George Relph and Sid James, must overcome many trials and tribulations, including devious bus operators and a derailed loco.

Filmed near Bath, and with Liverpool and Manchester Railway loco Lion starring as the Thunderbolt, it has come to be seen as a classic British comedy, and the production was covered at the time by The Railway Magazine in its March 1953 issue.

Extras on the Collector’s Edition include a new segment on the railway that sparked The Titfield Thunderbolt with Tim Dunn, The Titfield Thunderbolt Pathé short, the Making Of, Douglas Slocombe on Charles Crichton interviewed by Matthew Sweet, a 64-page booklet and a poster of the original artwork too.
